600hp outboard structural engineering

BREMERTON, WA

A new 600hp outboard engine was available and our client wanted to see what structural design changes would be required if multiple of these engines were installed on an existing vessel design. With a higher weight and thrust force, stress points on the transom were going to arise from the new engine. Art Anderson performed a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to determine if the transom would accommodate the larger engine. We modeled the transom and supporting structure to see where the high-stress points were. We were able to make recommendations concerning where to add supports for the new engines to be used on the vessel.
