Ediz Hook Shoreline Restoration: A Waterfront Engineering and Construction project to restore the shoreline

During Construction – A waterfront engineering and construction project to restore Ediz Hook shoreline

Art Anderson served as the Designer of Record/Waterfront Engineer for the U.S. Navy’s waterfront engineering and construction project to restore Ediz Hook shoreline, working in partnership with Western Marine Construction, the project’s prime contractor.

Ediz Hook is a three-mile, crescent-shaped sand spit that extends out from the Port Angeles Boat Haven and Marina. It provides a natural shelter to the Port Angeles waterfront from the Strait of Juan de Fuca waters. Over the past several decades, this natural barrier has suffered significant erosion—threatening both ecological balance and infrastructure stability.

As a trusted waterfront engineering firm, our team brought decades of experience in coastal infrastructure and marine design to this complex project. The project restored intertidal and back-beach (dry, upper part of the beach beyond the high-tide line, shaped by wind and sometimes storm waves) nearshore (shallow water area where waves break and re-form before surging up the foreshore habitat), and is consistent with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe’s ongoing restoration efforts along the southern shoreline of Ediz Hook.

Waterfront Engineering and Construction Scope of Work

The project included:

  • Removal of existing rock armoring, impounding structure, imported fill and debris, concrete/asphalt pads, a damaged sea wall, and two derelict structures.
  • Sampling and analysis was required to determine presence of contaminated fill in areas to be removed.
  • Site development included water, fire protection, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, heating, cooling and fuel distribution services.
