Art Anderson is proud to have contributed to one of the largest tidal wetland restoration efforts on the West Coast—bringing vital ecosystems back to life—at Ravenswood Pond SF2 in California.
Over the past century, nearly 85% of historic marshlands in the region were lost due to urban development and salt production. Today, a transformative restoration initiative is underway to restore 15,000 acres—an area the size of Manhattan—by reintroducing tidal flow and rebuilding natural habitats.
At Ravenswood Pond SF2, back in 2008, Art Anderson led design development and construction documentation for key water control systems. This 240-acre site was reimagined to support wildlife, with newly created nesting islands, shallow foraging areas, and improved water circulation.
Our team designed:
- Two water control structures to manage water depth and quality
- Two steel-frame wildlife viewing platforms
- Berms and habitat islands for ecological diversity
- Raised levees to enhance flood protection
In collaboration with contractor Triton Marine Construction, we also identified innovative value engineering solutions—saving $135,000 by incorporating recycled materials and efficient structural alternatives.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful engineering can balance habitat restoration with flood resilience and community access—helping nature thrive again.
