Please join us in congratulating Sean Hoynes, PE, our Chief Engineer, on an extraordinary 45 years with Art Anderson!
What began as a work-study internship through Olympic College in 1980 has grown into a remarkable four-and-a-half-decade career. As an intern, Sean “hand draft[ed] topography lines with ink and used a bent wire coat hanger as a guide because we didn’t have any splines” for a parking lot project for Delta Pier at Bangor. Since earning his Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington in 1983, Sean has built a legacy defined by technical excellence, leadership, and unwavering dedication.
Sean’s expertise spans a wide range of engineering disciplines:
- Large NAVFAC Design-Build projects at PSNS
- Utility design for municipalities and ports
- HVAC systems for schools and commercial buildings
- LEED-certified buildings
Sean Remembers the “Firsts”
In 45 years, the technology of engineering has changed from pens and pencils to monitors and a mouse. Sean remembers the early days with CAD technology:
“As the company’s first CAD operator I got to work with a very intelligent structural engineer who also happened to be the company vice president at the time. Talk about pressure! I remember trying to plot the drawing on the brand new, top-of-the-line IOLINE pen plotter. I got the plot scale wrong so the drawing ended up the size of a postage stamp. Being a pen plotter, the machine still went through all the motions to plot the line work I had drawn. The plotter looked like it was having a seizure!”
One of Sean’s most memorable early leadership roles came in 1991, when he served as Project Manager for the Ex-USS Decatur Conversion—a marine engineering design project that transformed a former guided missile destroyer into a weapons test platform:
“This was the first ‘large’ project that I got to work with and ‘manage’ some well-seasoned, veterans, and extremely knowledgeable senior engineers and designers. To say I managed this crew is a huge overstatement…”
He has led design efforts for industrial, commercial, and government clients, and served as Design Quality Control Manager on multiple Department of Defense projects. His work has earned high praise, including an Award of Excellence from Lockheed Martin Space for his “tremendous support” and “superior design solution” on the SWFLANT MSU 7th Storage Pad project. Sean worked “professionally and endured challenges as well as changing scope” while moving the project forward and delivering a 100% mission success.
Now, He’s Our Mentor
Now, as Chief Engineer, Sean oversees production, quality, mentorship, and supports business development initiatives. There’s very little Sean hasn’t seen or solved—making him an invaluable asset to our team and to our clients.
Recently, Sean took us on a walking tour of Downtown Bremerton, proudly pointing out the many projects he’s helped bring to life. His legacy is not just in the infrastructure around us—but in the mentorship, leadership, and passion he brings to every endeavor.
Over the years, Sean has:
🛠 985+ projects completed
🌎 5 PE licenses across different states
🧭 10 years as Chief Engineer at Art Anderson
Sean, thank you for your brilliance, your dedication, and your 45 years of engineering excellence. We are proud to celebrate this milestone with you.
👏 Congratulations, Sean! 👏
